The essence of 30 years of racing experience: the Assegai folding tire by Maxxis
Two years of development time, the essence of 30 years of racing experience, and the expert knowledge of 50 years of tire production have gone into Maxxis Assegai, the signature tire from Greg Minnaar.
” My idea was to design a tire around some of Maxxis’s iconic tread patterns. I started in the center by combining the Minion DHF and the Minion DHR II. The reason for this was that the surface of the DHF rolls well and maintains grip superbly on hardpack, in greasy turns, and on wet roots and rocks. The DHR II added faster rolling speed and more aggressive braking.
Next, I worked on the ‘extra’ lug to give you more support when leaning the bike over so that there is a consistent feeling all the way onto the side lugs. And that is how we move on to talk about my all-time favorite tire – the HighRoller. Maxxis engineers and I redesigned the HighRoller side lugs so that they had pretty much the same characteristics as the original did. But with the support provided by the extra lug, you have the ultimate wingman when cutting hard through flat turns.
In the end, I took the lug height from the Shorty. The lugs are well-supported, so the raised profile can easily bite into forest soil and dry, dusty ground.”
Application: All Mountain
Ground Conditions: hardpack, loose over hard, medium, loose, wet, mud
Type: folding tire
Tubeless System: Tubeless Ready
Rubber Compound: Dual
Carcass: 60 TPI
Sidewall: EXO Protection
Dimensions: ۲۹ x 2.5″
Air Pressure (max.): ۲٫۵ – ۳٫۴ bar
Manufacturer Part Number: 1188
For the Dual Compound, two different rubber compounds are processed into one tread strip. The arrangement of the compounds is planned individually according to the desired properties of Maxxis tires.
This extremely cut and abrasion-resistant material protects the sidewalls of various Maxxis MTB tires. It is very tightly woven, light, and very flexible. As a result, the performance of the tires remains convincingly good.
Wide Trail Casing (WT)
This design optimizes the tread layout and tire shape on today’s modern wider rims. Traditional tires are designed for narrower rims and become square on wider rims, resulting in a less than optimal performance. WT tires are optimized for an inner rim width of 35 mm but work excellently on all rims with an inner rim width of 30 – 40 mm.
Tubeless tires have many advantages: you can ride with less air pressure. This gives better traction and reduces rolling resistance. And where there is no tube, the risk of punctures is reduced. Maxxis TR tires are better prepared for mounting with sealant than other ” tubeless ready” tires. The bead of the Maxxis TR tires is completely covered with a rubber layer like a real UST tubeless tire. As a result, tubeless mounting is successful for all rims with standard dimensions even during the first inflation and with little liquid.
