WHAT IS MIPS?
MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) is a system of sliding surfaces in the helmet. It is designed to rotate in the helmet and slow down or reduce the amount of energy to and from the head. The risk of head injury from rotational forces is thus reduced.
WHY IS MIPS IMPORTANT?
If the head rotates rapidly and comes to an abrupt stop, the brain tissue may be subjected to a considerable strain. The stretching of the brain tissue, which can be caused by this movement, can result in various types of brain damage. MIPS has been developed to reduce the rotational acceleration of a shock/fall.
HOW DOES MIPS WORK?
MIPS uses a sliding plane system that sits inside the helmet and mimics the brain’s protective system. This layer rotates within the helmet and may need to slow down or reduce the amount of energy to or from the head. According to scientific research, the risk and severity of brain damage can be reduced if it is possible to reduce rotational acceleration.
